Students Attending Thoracic Surgery (StATS program)

What is the GW StATS program?
Students Attending Thoracic Surgery (StATS) is an innovative and exciting program at the George Washington University that places high school students virtually next to the surgeon at the operating table during a live telecast of a surgical procedure. StATS is a partnership between its founder Keith Mortman, M.D., FACS, FCCP, Director of Thoracic Surgery and Associate Professor of Surgery at the GW Medical Faculty Associates, and the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

What is the purpose of the GW StATS program?
The StATS program introduces students to various careers in the medical field. It also delivers a strong anti-smoking message by demonstrating the effects of smoking on the pulmonary cardiovascular system.

What to expect during a GW StATS session?
StATS sessions begin with a briefing from Dr. Mortman to provide background on the procedure which is about to take place. Dr. Mortman communicates with student participants during the procedure to explain what is happening and to answer any questions. At the end of the surgery, students meet with members of the surgical team to learn more about how to pursue various careers in medicine.

Who should participate in GW StATS?
This program is open to DC Public School juniors and seniors who are taking a health sciences class or have expressed an interest in pursuing a career in medicine. Students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in medicine are particularly encouraged to participate.
